STARS AND BARS

Stars And Stripes -          Delusions

"So we Afro-Americans must start looking Beyond the Stars and Stripes and see that from all standpoints, America in general, is bent on the extermination of blacks, either by economical pressures or physical violence."

'If blacks would stop allowing the flag and the Declaration of Independence to cloud their eyes, they could begin to see that it is only they, themselves, that can change their conditions."

"Blacks in America have allowed themselves, For the most part, to be trapped in the idea of what America should be, but is not. They have believed strongly in the principles on which America was supposed to have been founded; more strongly than did the founders themselves."

"We as black men must see that our Goals is not just civil rights, but plain and simple Human Rights."
Written in a book of poems, titled Reflections, by Andre' Swancy (1968)

A SUDDEN CRY OF HALT

A SHOT... RINGING...

A CRY TEARING, TERROR FILLED...

THE VICTIM'S PAIN THE HUNTER'S "THRILL" TO KILL... TO KILL...TO KILL

TO DIE SO YOUNG FOR WHAT YOU SAY.

Dr. Edward & Shirley Crosby spent four decades of educating African youth and credits Swancy with helping him in deciding the direction of his career and life.

The Swancy's and Crosby's raise their children together at the University of Kansas.

Crosby became a high school teacher of Germanic, BA in German and Spanish. Received a PHD University of Kansas. Taught at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. Retired Department of Pan-African Studies, Kent State University.

Retired after 25 years becoming emeritus chair professor of Pan-African Studies and Germanic and Slave Languages and Literature.

In 2013, the Crosby's presented this photo when Mrs. Swancy asked; them to show the world the collages hung on their walls and they still exist.
The collages are where Swancy wanted them to be.

Swancy and Edward had a lot in common, the meeting of the minds, respect and love for one another.

The Crosby's remain close to Mrs. Swancy and keep in touch regularly by email and phone. This picture is special and so are the Crosby's.

Book of Reflections Artist Note:

The following writings and collages that appear between these covers are to me, and will be to you, I hope, brief reflections of the Afro-American of his life and possible thoughts here in America in the sixties.

I conceived of all the Collages becoming one gigantic photo-mural and not just being Reflections of Afro-Americans, but projections of us all.

As for the writings, I believe they speak for themselves.
Simple as they may be.
